If there are 100s of other tourists on the street, you feel safer. You don't even notice that there are 10 unhoused folk, and 1 is close to OD'ing*. You walk in confidently.
*You should notice. But you don't.
Now picture the Bourbon street, but minus the housed folk and the hundreds of tourists.
Now you notice the unhoused people, the person OD'ing, the litter on the streets, and the cops. You still see the bar, but now you're too afraid to go in.
The cops do not make you feel safer. The crowd and the community made you feel safer.

Looks like it's actually explains a lot in a current narrative about cities and crime.

Я цю зиму дітей вчив про Древні Елладу і Рим, нагадав собі всякого різного, і тепер точно знаю, що точно не знаю, як краще. Американська демократія інакша, ніж європейські, правда. Має купу архаїчних рис, правда. Але говорити про повноцінність, не кажучи вже про краще/гірше... Якщо ти так думаєш, то звичайно, it's a free country, after all :))
Щоб два рази не вставати, ти десь писав, що нема нормального ринку квартир. Теж питання визначень: ринок є, але механізми в ньому не лише монетарні. З відгуків людей, які винаймали квартири і в Штатах, в різних місцях, і в інших країнах, в Німеччині, Швейцарії, Японії і Франції ринковості було щe відчутно менш ринково і важче. Мова про "надовго", для псевдопостійного життя. Хто це робив з родиною-- різниця ще більша.

Ні, я не спорю, що визначення афінської демократії було трохи іншим, але в Афінах, нагадаю, було рабство. Не думаю, що афінська модель дуже підходить до сучасності.
Еммм, ринок як раз і є системою, де ціни при добровільному визначаються законами попиту та пропозиції (які, собсна, потребують еластичності), без державного втручання.
Це textbook definition.
І тупо в силу відсутності еластичності попиту та пропозиції - рента (землі, квартир, тощо) не є ринковим явищем. В будь-якій країні. Ще раз повторю - про це навіть Адам Сміт писав.
Я це підкреслюю для того, щоб називати речі власними іменами.
