Interesting idea about PERCEPTION of crime

Picture Bourbon Street at 11pm. There's a bar you want to go into.

If there are 100s of other tourists on the street, you feel safer. You don't even notice that there are 10 unhoused folk, and 1 is close to OD'ing*. You walk in confidently.

*You should notice. But you don't.



Now picture the Bourbon street, but minus the housed folk and the hundreds of tourists.

Now you notice the unhoused people, the person OD'ing, the litter on the streets, and the cops. You still see the bar, but now you're too afraid to go in.

The cops do not make you feel safer. The crowd and the community made you feel safer.

Та все норм, воно не було проблемою. В результаті все якось порішали на Пенінсулі, просто частка пазлу що до доступності healthcare склалася - і вона особисто яскраво виглядає на контрасті навіть з набагато біднішою Східною Європою.

А що до бездомних та імміграції, хм, невпевнений, невпевнений... Тут вже і скандали з бездомними українцями були, аж в НЙТ стаття була, а хіспанікі-іммігранти серед бездомних точно є, особисто знав одного. Але даних тут в мене нема, так що не буду давати кількісних оцінок.

Враховуючи, що понд 80% жителів США native born, відсоток native born американців серед бездомних виходить під 90%. А вже людей, у яких можуть бути проблеми з імміграцією ще менше, ніж один з десяти, бо, впевнений, там натуралізованих мінімум третина. Особливо враховуючи, цитата з вищезгаданої статті: The number of years foreign-born adults lived in the United States was significantly associated with risk for homelessness.
