If there are 100s of other tourists on the street, you feel safer. You don't even notice that there are 10 unhoused folk, and 1 is close to OD'ing*. You walk in confidently.
*You should notice. But you don't.
Now picture the Bourbon street, but minus the housed folk and the hundreds of tourists.
Now you notice the unhoused people, the person OD'ing, the litter on the streets, and the cops. You still see the bar, but now you're too afraid to go in.
The cops do not make you feel safer. The crowd and the community made you feel safer.

Looks like it's actually explains a lot in a current narrative about cities and crime.

Я вже згадував, це мій основний триггер останнім часом.
Люди в своїх думках і діях не завжди розумні і раціональні, більше інстинктивні, що виправдано, бо так швидше і ефективніше... поки воно працює. Але оскільки наші умови сильно помінялися з тих часів, коли софмувалися наші інстинкти, часом інстинктивні підходи неефективні, а часом просто невірні. В результаті, одні з нас вибирають рухати умови життя в сторону сформованих інстинктив, gut feelings і т п, а інші -- пробувати міняти механізми прийяння рішень, виробляти нові інстинкти і т. п. Умовно, можна назвати перших консерваторами, а других прогресивістами/лібералами, але то лише умовно, там нюансів більше ніж базових принципів.
Це був ліричний відступ, а триггерає воно мене тому, що люди, бл.., сприймають все то спрощено, то неправильно, але оскільки в суспільстві публічне сприйняття формує нову реальність, з часом ця неправильність стає правильністю і в результаті хрін розберешся, де правда, а де газети the Onion чи Babylon Bee
