Roe vs. Wade
Jun. 25th, 2022 05:46 amRoe vs. Wade is dead. A Supreme Court justice doesn't try to hide his desire to cancel landmark decisions that legalize things like
* contraception,
* gay sex (like in "intercourse" - yep, the very act of it was illegal not so far ago, in 2003)
* same sex marriage.
Now every one of us faces a choice.
1. We can fight - e.g., because it is incompatible with our values.
2. We can surrender - e.g., saying that it is okay, people have lived with worse.
3. We can flee.
And no matter what you do - even if you do nothing (especially if you do nothing!) - you cannot escape this choice. I cannot escape this choice.
I am not passing a judgement here - I am just stating the fact that the choice is inevitable.

Date: 2022-06-25 05:06 pm (UTC)1. The modern fascistic backlash is international. The Trump administration got only 30 countries to sign the "Geneva Declaration" curtailing human rights, but among them are Hungary and Poland. Both are classic cases of democracies sliding into autocracy https://tijd.dreamwidth.org/81029.html
Countries like Canada and Australia are holding up but are not completely immune. That is why fleeing may not be the best option. The fight has to be international.
2. The 45-year-old right-wing conspiracy leading to the overthrow of Roe v Wade became possible in the late 1970s because of the loss of trust in government (after Watergate, Vietnam war, and other debacles) https://tijd.dreamwidth.org/72502.html
It is tempting to lose this trust now because of the government’s failure to protect abortion rights. But that would be wrong. Liberal democracy is not perfect but, as history shows, it is the best tool for protecting human rights. A successful fight should be aimed to strengthen the American democracy and its institutions, not to dismantle them.
