Is Florida making students uncomfortable?
Jul. 25th, 2023 09:01 pm1. Florida passes a law that prohibits making a student "feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress on account of his or her race, color, sex, or national origin."
2. Florida bans Black history AP classes - electives! Nobody gives a flying fuck about discomfort of the Black students.
3. Florida adopts a curriculum that says that slaves have benefitted from slavery, because masters taught them skills. You may suspect that Black students may be uncomfortable with such point of view - but who cares?
malyj_gorgan said that the original law will work both ways - while I was doubting that. Well, I have collected my receipts and all I had to do is a bit of waiting.
I am not happy to be right. I would rather be totally wrong. I am bringing this topic up NOT to rub it in somebody's face.
My goal is more meta. How did I know that would happen? Was it pure luck? Should I go out and buy a lottery ticket?
Or maybe I took a look at a certain group of people, checked their track record on racism and legislation - and decided that a certain outcome was way more probable than not? Maybe this approach is preferable to optimism? ("Let's hope that everything will work out somehow.")
Sorry, that's a heavy thought and trying to put it into words doesn't make me happy. But not putting it into words is worse.
